The effects of a negative economic shock on male marriage in the West Bank

This study examines how a large negative economic shock impacts marriage rates for young men in the West Bank. Utilizing data from before and after the sudden and abrupt closure of the Israeli labor market for Palestinian commuters from the West Bank in 2001, our empirical design employs a difference-in-difference strategy and uses the variations in localities’ exposure to the Israeli labor market before the shock. The closure reduced the employment and income of adult men asymmetrically across localities. Our findings show that the closure caused a reduction in marriage rates among young men

Scenario Analysis for Supply Chain Management of Milled Grain Products in South Africa: A System Dynamics Approach

This study aimed to identify the interactions between the sub-systems of the supply chain system of milled grain products, in South Africa, namely: (1) farming (agricultural); (2) transport (transportation); (3) manufacturing (milling); and (4) trade (retail). Furthermore, this paper investigated how these sub-systems are affected by economic and natural external factors namely: (1) the exchange rate between ZAR and USD; (2) the price of international crude oil; and (3) climate change and/or droughts. For this purpose, system dynamics (SD) model was developed and used, which enabled to

Measuring the efficiency of banks using high-performance ensemble technique

The importance of technology and managerial risk management in banks has increased due to the financial crisis. Banks are the most affected since there are so many of them with poor financial standing. Due to this problem, an unstable and inefficient financial system causes economic stagnation in both the banking sector and overall economy. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been used to examine decision-making units (DMUs) performance to enhance efficiency. Currently, with the rapid growth of big data, adding more DMUs will likely require a large amount of memory and CPU time on the computer

Early detection of hypo/hyperglycemia using a microneedle electrode array-based biosensor for glucose ultrasensitive monitoring in interstitial fluid

Diabetes is a common chronic metabolic disease with a wide range of clinical symptoms and consequences and one of the main causes of death. For the management of diabetes, painless and continuous interstitial fluid (ISF) glucose monitoring is ideal. Here, we demonstrate continuous diabetes monitoring using an integrated microneedle (MN) biosensor with an emergency alert system. MNs are a novel technique in the field of biomedical engineering because of their ability to analyze bioinformation with minimal invasion. In this work we developed a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) based MN glucose

Systems Thinking for Planning Sustainable Desert Agriculture Systems with Saline Groundwater Irrigation: A Review

Agricultural land expansion is a solution to address global food security challenges in the context of climate change. However, the sustainability of expansion in arid countries is difficult because of scarce surface water resources, groundwater salinity, and the health of salt-affected soil. Developing expansion and sustainability plans for agriculture requires systems thinking, considering the complex feedback interactions between saline groundwater, salt-affected soil, plant growth, freshwater mixing with saline groundwater, irrigation systems, and the application of soil amendments to

Correction to: Identification of TIMPs signatures in Randall plaque from single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-Seq) analysis (Functional & Integrative Genomics, (2024), 24, 1, (11), 10.1007/s10142-024-01296-0)

The original article contains an error. Abstract has been removed during processing. This is now added here. Background Tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) are essential for controlling the dynamics of the extracellular matrix. Although their role in vascular diseases like as atherosclerosis and plaque development has been widely researched, the specific patterns of their expression and their functional significance inside Randall plaque tissues, a distinct vascular pathology linked to nephrolithiasis, have not been well investigated. Objectives The objective of this work was to

Using graph embeddings to improve the performance of embedding based recommender Systems

This paper discusses the use of node2vec graph embeddings to improve the performance of wide and deep recommenders by substituting the embedding layer with graph embeddings to leverage its representational power without major investments in migrating from current recommender systems. First, recommender systems importance in modern day platforms is discussed. Then, the magnitude of investment needed to deploy a recommender system into a production environment is discussed and finally, wide and deep recommenders and their importance in industry is outlined along with our experiments and results

Downlink Throughput Prediction in LTE Cellular Networks Using Time Series Forecasting

Long-Term Evolution (LTE) cellular networks have transformed the mobile business, as users increasingly require various network services such as video streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing. A network planning approach is required for network services to meet user expectations and meet their needs. The User DownLink (UE DL) throughput is considered the most effective Key Performance Indicator (KPI) for measuring the user experience. As a result, the forecast of UE DL throughput is essential in network dimensioning for the network planning team throughout the network design stage. The
