Nile University Architecture and Urban Design raises the banner of innovation at the World Urban Forum. “Sand Awakening” wins Third place in عقول Sustainable Engineering Solutions Competition.
A talented team of five architects, four graduates from Architecture and Urban Design (ARUD) program at Nile University, and a Cairo University, graduate won third place in the "عقول for Sustainable Engineering Solutions" competition launched by the Ministry of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and the Syndicate of Engineers at the World Urban Forum 12th session.
The project proposes a sustainable, affordable, agricultural model to address Egypt's critical challenges by reducing Nile dependency through seawater desalination and groundwater reinjection. Reclaiming desert land will increase food production, reduce imports and strengthen food security, while creating jobs, alleviating urban overcrowding and providing Affordable, Appropriate and Adaptable living enviroments. Prioritizing climate resilience, the project integrates renewable energy, heat-resistant infrastructure and sustainable building practices. A prototype for future cities, it follows the “15-minute neighborhood” concept with accessible services, people-centred streets with wind-optimized design, inclusive and safe public space, offering a scalable, resilient model for Egypt’s desert reclamation.
Finally, special thanks to the Program Director of Architecture and Urban Design (ARUD) Program and Executive Director of the Architecture & Urban Design - Research Excellence Center (ARU-DREC) Prof. Dina Shehayeb for her constant support.
