Biography

Prof. Sameh Heikal received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the Faculty of Science, Cairo University, in 2011. He subsequently completed postdoctoral studies as a Fulbright Scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), USA. This international research experience strengthened his expertise in plant–microbe interactions and established a foundation for his subsequent work in microbial biotechnology. 

Throughout his academic career, Prof. Heikal has been actively involved in undergraduate and graduate education while developing an expanding portfolio of national and international research collaborations. He has collaborated with distinguished universities and research centers in more than 15 countries, including the USA, UK, France, Spain, and Mexico. At the national level, his collaborations have included Cairo University, Ain Shams University, the National Research Centre, and the City of Scientific Research and Technological Applications. 

From 2017 to 2022, Prof. Heikal supervised the Department of Microbial Genetic Resources at the National Gene Bank (NGB), Egypt. During this period, he and his colleagues established the NGB Culture Collection, which currently includes more than 1,000 identified microbial strains. His work at the Gene Bank contributed to the development and preservation of valuable microbial resources with potential applications in agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental research. 

During this stage of his career, Prof. Heikal also expanded his research leadership through participation in and leadership of more than 10 research projects funded by national and international organizations, including STDF, FAO, and USAID. He has led several multidisciplinary working groups and established collaborations spanning microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture, environmental science, and related fields. 

One of his notable international research collaborations was with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where Prof. Heikal and his colleagues developed novel cultivation-dependent approaches for bringing previously “uncultured” bacteria into cultivation. These methodologies opened new opportunities for the discovery and characterization of unconventional microorganisms with potentially valuable biological functions and applications. 

From 2022 to 2023, Prof. Heikal served as Associate Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics at the Faculty of Biotechnology, MSA University. In September 2023, he joined the School of Biotechnology at Nile University as a full-time Associate Professor. In January 2024, he was promoted to the rank of Professor. 

A major milestone in his research career came with the translation of his work on beneficial agricultural microorganisms into intellectual property. In 2025, Prof. Heikal was granted U.S. Patent No. 12507696, describing plant growth-promoting bacteria isolated from the roots of wheat grown in Egyptian soils. The patent represents an important step toward translating Egypt’s indigenous microbial resources into sustainable agricultural biotechnology applications. It highlights the potential of locally adapted beneficial microorganisms as biological alternatives or complements to conventional agricultural inputs, with potential applications in improving crop growth, soil health, and sustainable agricultural productivity. 

In parallel with his academic and research development, Prof. Heikal has increasingly focused on multidisciplinary and sustainability-oriented research. Aligned with Nile University’s mission to promote sustainability, his current research emphasizes sustainable and eco-friendly approaches for the bioremediation of hazardous pollutants that threaten the environment, including heavy metals, pesticides, and industrial textile dyes. He has also collaborated with the University of Minnesota, USA, on the discovery of novel bio-nanomaterials for the reclamation of agricultural wastewater. 

In line with the One Health approach, Prof. Heikal has participated in multidisciplinary research initiatives investigating the genomic mechanisms underlying the beneficial or pathogenic effects of soil microorganisms, as well as exploring microbes associated with wild plants as potential sources of bioactive compounds with pharmaceutical applications. 

Beyond research and teaching, Prof. Heikal has contributed to scientific capacity building through organizing and participating in numerous international training courses and workshops in countries including Egypt, the USA, Spain, Italy, and India. These activities have further strengthened his commitment to knowledge transfer, international collaboration, and the development of future generations of biotechnology professionals. 

In 2025, in alignment with Nile University’s commitment to academic quality, continuous improvement, and accreditation excellence, Prof. Heikal was appointed as the Director of the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Unit at the School of Biotechnology. In this role, he contributes to advancing the School’s quality assurance and accreditation processes, supporting the continuous improvement of academic programs, and promoting alignment with national and international quality standards. 

Through this progression, Prof. Heikal’s career has evolved across microbial research, international collaboration, microbial resource development, agricultural biotechnology, environmental sustainability, academic leadership, and quality assurance. His current work reflects a continued commitment to translating microbiological research into innovative and sustainable solutions while contributing to excellence in biotechnology education and institutional development.
