SDG 12 — Responsible Consumption and Production
Nile University promotes responsible consumption and production by advancing circular economy research, resource-efficient technologies, waste reduction, and sustainable material alternatives. Through applied research, student entrepreneurship, and partnerships with industry and international organizations, the university contributes to addressing environmental challenges and encouraging more sustainable production practices.
Priority initiatives
Exploring Alternatives to Single-Use Plastics in Egypt
Nile University hosted a foresight and validation workshop on alternatives to single-use plastics in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), funded by the Government of Japan. The workshop brought together government, academic, industry, and development representatives to explore sustainable materials, circular economy models, and pathways for reducing plastic consumption.
Turning Organic Waste into Sustainable Products: Gensect
Gensect, a biotechnology startup founded by Nile University graduates, applies black soldier fly larvae technology to convert organic waste into animal feed and fertilizer. The startup ranked third among 17 startups at the Business Incubator in Biotechnology Demo Day, demonstrating entrepreneurial innovation in circular waste management.
Sustainable Materials and Carbon Capture Innovation
A research project led by Khlood Ahmed from Nile University's Smart Engineering Research Center received second place at the Khaleeha Wa Jadeedha Environmental Solutions Hackathon. The project explores the use of agricultural waste to produce recycled materials for cement applications and carbon capture, supporting resource efficiency and sustainable manufacturing.
Reducing Manufacturing Waste through Applied Research
Nile University researchers presented a study at NILES 2024 exploring statistical approaches to minimizing material waste in corrugated sheet manufacturing. The research examined how optimizing production conditions could support resource efficiency and reduce industrial waste.
Research on Biodegradable Alternatives to Conventional Plastics
Nile University researchers published a review in the Egyptian Journal of Chemistry exploring cellulose extracted from water hyacinth and seaweed as a potential source for biodegradable bioplastics. The research examines sustainable material alternatives and opportunities to reduce dependence on conventional plastics.
Promoting Reuse through Student-Led Clothing Initiatives
Nile University's Wessal Club organized clothing collection and donation initiatives that extended the useful life of garments while supporting community members and university custodial staff. These activities encouraged responsible consumption, reuse, and community engagement.
