ARUD Students Bring Urban Regeneration Visions to Life in Aswan

As part of Nile University's continued commitment to practical learning and community engagement, students of the Architecture and Urban Design (ARUD) program have concluded a transformative semester-long journey through the course "Design Studio VI: Urban Regeneration and Adaptive Reuse," culminating in a series of thoughtful design interventions for the historic city of Aswan.

This unique academic experience was made possible through close collaboration with Aswan Governorate, under the special attention and support of His Excellency Eng. Amr Lashine, Governor of Aswan. The journey began with a field visit to Aswan, where students, accompanied by faculty members Dr. Menna Tawfik and Dr. Ahmed El-Husseiny, met with Governorate officials to identify four sites of strategic significance within Aswan's broader development vision. The Governorate generously facilitated site visits and provided essential data, grounding the students' work in the real challenges and opportunities facing the city.

Over the course of the semester, students worked collaboratively in pairs to craft Action Area urban design strategies and propose the adaptive reuse of a valuable heritage building — before moving into an individual design phase, in which each student developed a new architectural typology intended to tactically contribute to Aswan's urban regeneration.

The culmination of this journey will take center stage at the Annual ARUD Exhibition, where students will proudly present their work to His Excellency Governor Eng. Amr Lashine.

This collaboration stands as a testament to the power of academia-government partnerships in shaping meaningful, community-rooted design education — bridging the gap between the classroom and the cities students aspire to help build.
