Prof. Ahmed Elghazouli
President, Nile University
Prof. Ahmed Youssef Awad Elghazouli was appointed as President of Nile University effective 1 September 2026, following approval by the Board of Trustees and endorsement by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. With a distinguished international career, including 20 years as Head of Structural Engineering at Imperial College London and over 30 years of engineering research and consulting, he brings strong leadership, global academic influence, and a proven commitment to advancing academic and research excellence.
Meet the President
Prof. Ahmed Elghazouli spent most of his academic career at Imperial College London, where he was also Head of Structural Engineering for 20 years. In 2023, he was selected by the Hong Kong Government as a Global STEM Scholar and Chair Professor based at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
He also earlier held various other full time and visiting academic posts in the UK, Egypt, Italy, Belgium, USA, Japan, and China. Prof. Elghazouli has over 30 years of experience in engineering research and consulting, producing over 400 international publications and working as a specialist design expert on many notable infrastructure projects and iconic structures worldwide. He is a Fellow of the UK Institutions of Civil and Structural Engineers and has played a leading role in international code development committees and professional engineering societies.
In 2016, he was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), the highest and most coveted honor for a UK engineer, in recognition of his outstanding and continuing contributions to international engineering research, education, and practice. Prof. Elghazouli is a graduate of Ain Shams University in Egypt and obtained his MSc and PhD degrees from Imperial College London. Over the past 20 years, he has also participated in several national initiatives and committees in Egypt, including those related to design standards, quality assurance, conservation of heritage structures, and the engineering sector of the supreme council of universities.

I have followed the progress of Nile University since its inauguration some twenty years ago and have observed the significant strides it has made over the years. The research-driven, community-engaged, and industry-cocreated model of Nile University has represented a much-needed national drive. Today, as the University celebrates its Vicennial Anniversary, we have an opportunity to reflect on our strengths, build on our achievements, and move forward with purpose.
We live in a time of rapid and profound change. Advances in artificial intelligence, digital technologies and innovation are transforming the way we learn, work, and live, while the world faces increasingly complex challenges that require new ways of thinking. With its established strengths and its growing multidisciplinary scope, Nile University is well placed to contribute effectively to Egypt's future and to address challenges of national, regional, and global importance.
Nile University continues to grow as an inspiring and innovative hub where talented individuals come together to learn, explore, innovate, and make a difference. We aim to provide an educational experience that prepares our students not only with strong academic credentials, but also with the ability to think critically across disciplines, to adapt to change and to solve complex problems.
