Wael Akl is the Dean of School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and currently the Acting Provost – Nile University. Prof. Akl has finished his Ph.D. from the Mechanical Engineering Department, University of Maryland-College Park in 2004 in the field of smart materials and ever since, Prof. Akl has been engaged in research work in the field of smart materials and structures in the past 13 years. Prof. Akl has been promoted to the rank of full professor in 2016 from the Faculty of Engineering – Ain Shams University. In 2009, Prof. Akl has received the National Encouragement Prize from the Academy for Scientific Research and Technology (ASRT). In 2013, he has been listed in Marquis Who’s Who for his achievements in the area of Smart Materials and Structures and Acoustic Metamaterials.He has established and has served as the director of the Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate- and Mechatronics Master’s Programs at Nile University since 2013 until January 2018. The Mechatronics Master’s Program at NU is an ERASMUS Joint Degree in Mechatronics with (Hochschule Karlsruhe – Technik und Wirtschaft – Germany, University of Oviedo – Spain and École Nationale Supérieure de Mécanique et des Microtechniques – France).Prof. Akl has been granted a Research Faculty Fellow and visiting professor at the University of Maryland for 10 years in a row starting 2006.Prof. Akl has been the PI and Co-PI for several research and capacity building grants funded by STDF (Egypt), FP7 (EU) and TEMPUS/ERASMUS+KA2 (EU) addressing academic capacity building systems in Egypt focusing on vocational education, bridging the gap between academia and industry, vocational teachers development, innovative techniques in teaching math and science in pre-university academic systems and using virtual reality technology and e-learning approaches for the improvement of various academic disciplines in engineering, cultural heritage, STEM and special-needs education. Prof. Akl has managed to attract over 250 MEGP international grants in Egypt, 50 MEGP to NU, and about 10 MEGP in domestic funding. Prof. Akl is a co-founder of the highly ranked research group in Acoustics, Vibrations and Smart Structures at Ain Shams University. Ever since his appointment as the Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in February 2017 and acting Provost in April 2017, Prof. Akl has streamlined the Quality Assurance process, updated the academic regulating manuals, spearheaded the efforts for developing needed studies for the establishment of 9 new schools at Nile University. Prof. Akl is also coordinating EG-EU efforts in developing a unique entrepreneurship development and learning system targeting fresh graduates in the area of manufacturing. Prof. Akl has established FESTO Authorized and Certified Training Center at Nile University. This is one of a chain of 14 similar centers established by FESTO (Global leader in the field of Mechatronics and Automation). Along his position as the dean of School of Engineering at Nile University, Prof. Akl is a consultant at NAQAAE and among the leading team to develop Egypt’s National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and is a full member of the Sector Committee for Technological Education (Supreme Council of Universities). Prof. Akl has over 42 published papers, most of which in international journals.
